Recent visits to our partner schools to see the “colors” of gamma-rays

The colors of gamma radiation are revealed!

In the months following the initial installation of our radiation counters at Pinewood School and Camplindo High, we found that the levels of radiation at those two schools were statistically distinct from the levels seen at LBL, and from each other. We visited each school with more advanced radiation detection technologies able to identify the particular isotopes contributing to radiation locally to learn more about what can drive these subtle differences between locations.

We met with students to discuss how radioactive isotopes are identified and explore the sources of background radiation present in a range of common materials around the school with Mrs. Abraham’s AP Chemistry class at Pinewood and the Science club at Campolindo.
