RadWatch and DoseNet participated in the Bay Area Science Festival again this fall. We were part of both the North Bay Science Discovery Day and Discovery Day at AT&T Park.
RadWatch and DoseNet are always looking for opportunities to reach out to the public. Engaging with students and their parents is an important part of our outreach activities. We were excited for the opportunity to participate in the Bay Area Science Festival during the Discovery Day at AT&T park for the first time last year, where we learned a lot about how to best engage with our youngest participants.
This year, we worked to expand and improve our interactive demonstrations to better engage our young audience at these events. Using several basic Geiger counters and touch-screen DoseNet devices, undergraduate and graduate student volunteers demonstrated the detection of ionizing radiation in our environment and allowed participants to explore sources of radiation and how well different materials worked to shield such radiation.
Thanks to everybody that helped out both weekends! That includes Rafael, Sagnik, Yaro, Austin, Tyler, and Rebecca for helping at the North Bay event; and Matt, Zirui, Emily, Daniel, Tyler, and Rebecca for helping at AT&T park. Special thanks to Tyler Bailey and Rebecca Krentz-Wee, who took the time to participate both weekends. Also, special thanks to Austin Shih for transporting all of our equipment for the North Bay Discovery Day.
